Indoor hockey in Spain/Catalonia


Experiment in Torroella de Montgrí

Dear Reader,

After soccer, hockey is the most popular team-sport in Holland.

So as a native Dutchman I decided one day to introduce this family sport in our small village on the Costa Brava

We received a lot of sticks and balls and complicated things like legguards for the goal keeper.

The Townhall gave its support, a teacher of gymnastics helped as parents did and we tried to get a hockey-project from the ground. Youngsters with a lot of talent joined this new thing in one of the oldest villages of Catalonia.

But I made one big mistake. In those days, field-hockey was concentrated in Barcelona.
The Catalan Hockey Federation did not see any possibility to bring this fine sport into
the Province of Girona.

It was indeed starting from scratch.

But we had a good time and played every Saturday. We even organized an indoor hockey tournament for Christmas.

We gave up the project because it was too new.

But a lot of youngsters from the village, male and female and my own daughters
- both good hockey-players - have had a good time in this experiment that failed.

More than fifteen years later the Spanish National Hockey Team
has become one of the best in the world.
